How do you dye strawberry blonde hair?

I have strawberry Blonde hair. I'd like to make it a light ash brown. Every time I attempt it takes the little red in my hair and brings it out , giving it more of an orangey look. I have been buying the "ASH" color. What am I doing wrong? Should I leave it in longer then it suggests? Is there a good brand for this that someone could recommend.
