In the ending of Man of Steel does General Zod kill the civilians with his laser eyes?

Me and my friend have been debating this for a while now, he says that the civilians are killed at the end of Man Of Steel by General Zod's laser eye and is cut in half which is why superman screams at the end, whereas i know he screams because he was forced to kill Zod. can someone please give their opinions
