Necessary qualifications to be an animal rehabilitator/trainer?

I'm currently in my first semester of school to be a veterinary technician but I have a couple questions and I'm not sure who to ask. I'd like to work at a humane society or a place like the "pitbulls and parolees" show. I want to help rehabilitate and train animals who have been through a lot. Am I in the right program? Or am I wasting my money? I'd still like to have a college education, but is there another program that would be more beneficial?
