I have a medium sized dog who barks and howls ( like a huge dog ) everytime I leave the house what can I do ?

Short of having her vocal cords removed. Muzzles don't seem to be available anymore ( not that that would be something I'd want to use), I'm disabled and live on a small fixed income so I certainly can't call the dog whisperer. One problem is that she doesn't like anyone , but me and I think when I leave she thinks I'm never coming back. I was in the hospital for eight days a few years back and she went crazy when I finally came home ( I had a good neighbor take care of her while I was gone and he said she obviously missed me ) but can a dog have that good a memory ? Anyway I'd appreciate any suggestions that won't cost me much money
