I'm thinking about taking up sewing. Is it hard to learn?

I'd like to learn how to sew my own clothes. Is it hard? What are the essentials I need to buy to get started? (besides the obvious). Are their certain kinds of materials that are better than others? Certain needles or threads? I'm completely new to this. Any helpful answers would be appreciated. Thanks!
