How to use an external cd drive on surface rt?

I bought a cd drive for my surface rt, but it won't play discs. I tried going to my computer and selecting the drive but it says to insert a disc, but when I do the drive disappears from my computer. Any suggestions on how I can get it to work or what the problem is?
