First person shooter question?

I've always wondered, see in fps games? In single player do you have an actual model? Like in Bioshock infinite Elizabeth has a shadow.. But you don't, and you don't have feet when you look down. Same with a lot of fps and I'm just wondering are you just floating hands or is there an actual model ?
