Was it ok to do this?

Im a 22 year old woman and My friend who havent seen in 2 years has recently come home from university after a 2 year course and we had a party to celebrate him graduating, i found him sad and asked him what was wrong and he told me that he was gay and is depressed about it, so i looked at him and got up and told him 'im gay too, well a lesbian and see that woman over there (pointed to my girlfriend who was talking to someone) shes my partner, now if you need to talk come see me and her' So i came out to him to help him, im openly lesbian but he had no ide so was it an appropriate thing to do?
