Will an envelope too large to fit in your tiny mailbox be redirected to post office?

I am expecting an envelope a little bit bigger than a large manila envelope and worried it won't fit it in my tiny mailbox, will it be redirected to the post office and will I be notified? or will they just leave it outside?
