Question #12300228

Why did Richard the Lionheart only speak French if he was an English king?

After all, he was a very important English king during the Third Crusade. He led the English Crusaders against Saladin and his Saracens. Wouldn't it be imperative for him to speak the language of his people in order to give them battle orders and such?
