is a 16 gauge too big for a first nose piercing ring?

I got a size 16 gauge for my nose piercing when I got it done 3 days ago. My cousin was with me and she thought it was too big, but the guy told us it was best to get that size. But my nose extremly hurts. So is a 16 gauge too big or right? Btw im 17yrs old and its my first facial piercing.
