how to get rid of oblong boxes with small writing and go back to words in mail?

When I bring up mail all the wording for executable commands are now boxes with small letters in them. To find out what they say you have to hover over the box and read what the command is. Never had this problem before. The words always appeared and you would then click on the command you wanted.
