What is the point of a social security number?

I'm 16, just curious because my fiancé & I are getting married in Maine on Sunday and we need our social security numbers..what does that prove to the judges? What can info about me can they track by my SS number? Thanks! & p.s. Don't comment about my marriage, yes I know I'm 16 but my parents approve so please just answer my question
