switching to straight talk?

I don't have enough to go out and buy an expensive phone my ex boyfriend and I got a plan in his name from verzion two months ago. We broke up and he canceled my line his contract is not up. I want to switch over to straight talk will I still be able to do that? He did this in a horrible way and I really need a phone. If I open my own account I feel like they will screw me over
