non cutesy horror animes?

Does anyone know any good non-cutesy horror animes with a good storyline which immediately draws you in and which is also fast paced and where you get to see people murdered/killed. Also, if the characters are nearing the end of high school or even out of school, that would be amazing!!! I tried watching higurashi and shiki, but to me they're both really cutesy and the characters are also annoying & immature. Also, I've noticed that it's only like 15% of each episode which is actually slightly "dark" or "mysterious", which leaves me feeling like....... '-_-... reallyy?!?!?!!! an example of what I'm looking for is something like death note - it had mature characters, the atmosphere was ominous/sinister, it drew you in, and it had an amazing plot. but I want something with more gore, horror and crazier characters.
