TENSE HELP?

From what I could make out, it seemed like John and Jackson are missing. OR From what I could make out, it seems like John and Jackson are missing. I m telling my reader that earlier my protagonist was talking to her brother, and from what she could make out, it seems/seemed that John and Jackson are missing. I m writing in present tense. Please help. Which one is correct?
