If i restore my ipod touch can i use a a backup to put all my music and photos back on it?

My ipod isn't syncing, so I've decided to restore it and see if that fixes the problem. I'm backing it up now onto my computer. If i restore it, will that backup be lost? Or can I use that backup to put everything back onto my ipod?
