One Database for one Mobile Application that runs on both iOS and Android?

Me and my team are developing a school app and we are currently using Android Studio and xCode. However, is it possible that we would only use one database which are compatible to both android and iOS, if yes, what do you recommend? Currently, we know about MySQL; however, as we continue doing research, we found out about Firebase, which seems to be more efficient for us?
