Simple excel question: total up categorical data ("yes/No") at bottom of column?

I have a column with yes/no categories. All I want to do it have the total Yes answers added to a cell at the bottom. Also, how can I get a cell to write "yes" when I type "y", and "no" when I type "n"? thanks
