Can you use Amazon Gift Cards to pay for internet or data?

Small back story. So my Grandmother has this “online boyfriend” that is in “South Korea” in the miliary. (You can see my opinion of the situation with my air quotes) wel about once a month he has her buy him a Amazon Gift card and says its for him to get internet so they can talk. Is this possible or is she being scammed?
