Why isn t my MacBook Pro responding to my monitor?

I have a ViewSonic monitor that I want to connect to my late 2011 MacBook Pro. When I put the VGA cable into my VGA/HDMI/DVI hub, it doesn t recognize my Mac. How do I get it to recognize my Mac? All the wires are screwed and plugged in tightly.
