Will i have a reaction to using a ventolin inhaler?

My doctor prescribed me an inhaler to see whether my breathing difficulties are asthma related. I don't have wheezing, but have periods of shortness of breath. It doesn't happen everyday. I'm afraid to use it when i do have my breathing difficulties and i use when my breathing problems are not even related to asthma i may have a reaction
