Question #1900252

Why won't my new ethernet cable work?

I bought a new ethernet cable to use with my laptop because the old one is way too short. There is no wireless internet in my apartment building. The cable plugs into the wall, not a router, on one end and my laptop on the other (obviously). The only difference I can see between the two is that the old one is grey and shorter and the new one is blue and longer. I am completely ignorant on this subject. I thought all ethernet cables were made equal with the exception of their length and perhaps color...
