question for beginners painting?

i'm 23 and i've never painted before. lately i've wanted to pursue creative avenues, so i figured why not painting? i am not good at drawing anything, i never have been. for christmas i got 5 medium sized canvas with paints. what should i do if i can't paint anything good? go the abstract route and just do random colors? i don't know really where to begin or what to do..
