Good road bike recommendations?

I'm planning on stopping by my lbs soon here, but I wanted some input from another source as well. I am a fairly serious mountain biker, I regularly race enduros and the occasional XC race. I would like a road bike that I can ride on the trainer/take for the occasional road ride, but alo use as a commuter. Any suggestions? My budget is probably about $700-$1000.
