Why does my breath often have a bitter/rubbery smell to it?

So lately I’ve been noticing that I’ll have bad breath frequently. I know it’s not from eating something because it’ll show up even if I don’t eat something. But for some reason even if I brush my teeth in the morning, my breath often has a bitter/rubbery smell to it and I'll notice it throughout the day. What could be causing this?
