Question #5350155

Can sleep deprivation cause mental illnesses?

Just curious as to whether lacking something like 4 or 5 days sleep could cause serious damage to the brain and possibly result in various mental illnesses - like paranoia, anxiety or schizophrenia? If possible would the mental illnesses be long term or would they 'fade' as you got your sleeping schedule back on track? One last thing, if sleep deprived and damage to the brain was caused, would that be long term/permanent or would that also rectify it's self after sleeping again? (In Biology we're learning about the effects of sleep deprivation, this made me curious about the above).
