How to wash African American hair?

I have african american hair and i wash mt hair like every other two days but everytime i wash my hair it always comes out in a poof (even when i flat iron it) and i end up putting it in a thick ponytail! how do i make it where it'll come out straight after i flat iron it!! please, i need all the help!! thanks in advance
