Internet Explorer opens to a blank page?

I have Windows 7 and use Internet explorer mainly for Real player downloads. So whenever I open Internet Explorer the page is blank and most internet options and settings are grayed out. Only the in private browsing option and suggested sites is available. the browser works fine during internet explorer and google chrome works fine as well. So what do I do?
