Is south philly a bad neighborhood?

A friend and I are going to the Phillies game on Sunday. We were gonna walk about 2 miles to johns' roast pork sandwich shop for cheesesteaks. I was wondering if it would be better if we drove from the stadium to the food place. We also wanna know from someone more familiar with the area if it is high in crime and how likely it is that 2 caucasion 17 year old boys run in to any trouble in that area. Are there any streets we should avoid as well? I really am not that familiar with the area so the more info and honesty the better. Thanks! Would pepperspray be a good or bad idea? Also, is there parking near the area?
