Why does the volume not work on my laptop?

I was using my computer like 1/2 an hour ago and the volume worked perfectly. I went away and came back to it (no one else being in the house) and the volume won't work! I checked the volume settings and turned them all up made sure it wasn't muted and also checked the volume settings on the site I was on and I can't find anything wrong! Someone please help!!
