Can you play games from the ps3 on the ps vita?

I am thinking about buying one, can anyone tell me about the ps vita? Can you play games on the ps3 on the ps vita? I read you can link it to the ps3, I was wondering how that works? It would be so cool if I can do that and be able to play my sims games on my ps vita.
