How long should I leave my brand-new Play Station 3 controller when I'm charging it for the first time?

The catalog says you should charge it until it is fully charged, which will take something like two hours. But one of my friends told me when charging it for the first time, you should leave it in charge for at least 6 hours! Is this true?
