My roommate is abusive?

My room mate is abusive. If you do not do what he says then he breaks up my belongings, curses me out, threatens to hit me, etc. He says I'm bipolar, mentally, ill, etc. yet he is the one that snaps over everything and anything. I can not pay the rent by myself, what should I do?
