How does the iPhone (5) battery act when it's fully charged?

How does the iPhone (5) battery act when it's fully charged? When the iPhone is fully charged and the plug symbol appears at the battery icon, does that mean that the charger power is going to the battery and from the battery it goes to the components? Or does the power go directly to the component? Thank you for your time!
