where did autism come from?

I was born in the early 80's and never once heard anything about autism until the past few years (maybe 10 years) . is it something in food or the way they are delivering babies? It has to be something that they have changed since I was born. How can it be prevented? And why does it seem like women who have had multiple miscarriages are more likely to have an autistic child?
