Running my PlayStation 3 through a computer monitor?

I have a PlayStation 3 in my room but right now it's running through an old square TV. I don't have that much money to buy a full HD TV. But I have just enough for a HD Monitor. I have a HDMI Cable, plenty of powerpoints and a set of computer speakers. The monitor I'm looking to buy has a headphone output and a HDMI input. Am I able to buy the monitor, plug my PS3 into it with the HDMI cable and then plug my speakers into the monitor and have the sound come out through them?
