Is there any way to connect my Xbox 360 to my computer without having internet?

I'm wanting to use Windows Media Center (or, anything really) to share media onto my Xbox 360. When I try to go through the steps, it says that Windows Media Center cannot find the extender. I'm using Windows Vista, and have my computer connected directly to my Xbox 360 via an Ethernet cord.
