Secretly porting a phone number to a different carrier?

My boyfriend and I just got out of a nasty long term relationship. I would like to know how i could port my phone number over to a different carrier without his knowledge. He pays for our phone and is the account holder. As far as i know, it's not possible, but I'm just wondering in case it is. thanks in advance!
