Would the UK ever legalize cannabis for either medical or recreational purpose?

I know this has been asked a lot in the past, but I want to keep up to date. Has been discussed before or recently? How far away is it from Legalization? Will it be legalised? What benefits or disadvantages would the UK get from legalising it?
